Postcards from the Future: Crowdsourcing a Design Fiction Artifact

WORKSHOP

SATURDAY, JULY 10, 2021 at 04:00 - 07:00 (EST/UTC/GMT-04:00)
Duration: 3 Hours
Language: English

Postcards from the Future (http://future-postcards.com) is a crowdsourced and co-created design fiction project. Each of the 32 postcards depicts a scenario with curious artifacts, interactions, and situations from alternate technological and social worlds. It is a result of more than a year of collaboration between Viraj Joshi and 21 creatives from around the world, and 4 different events where these "postcards" were built in crowdsourced sessions.

In this session, we shall create the next "Postcard from the Future".

From ambiguous technology, climate change, social inequality, to the pandemic, our habits and ways in which we interact with our world have been forced to be reconsidered. The postcards have a narrative-driven structure that sets a stage for testing products, systems, and people's relations with them.

The process of creation of the 32 "postcards" or visions of alternate futures, has led to some frameworks and methods for scanning and qualifying weak signals, world-building, and producing design fiction artifacts. This session will present yet another iteration of these methods, modeled especially for Primer 2021, and the size of the participant group.

Later, the postcard will also be hosted on http://future-postcards.com, and be a part of further discourse of this project.

For those only recently dipping their feet into futures, this workshop will provide a selection of frameworks built upon Viraj's learnings of speculative design from the Royal College of Art, and forecasting practice while working at Fjord; and his other engagements. These processes are inspired from science fiction writing, speculative design, and strategic foresight. For designers, technologists, and engineers, the session could foster a wider perspective that is critical to their practice. For foresight and strategy practitioners, this session is a great opportunity to think about tying high level strategy to tangible outcomes.

More importantly, it will be three hours of thinking through making. Investigations into alternate futures allow us to compare our situations with those that very well could be, and to think of things in a plural, intersectional sense. While deciding on granular details in the design fiction artifact; and rules of an alternative world, the session promises to be fun, slightly tongue-in-cheek, and rooted in principles of plurality, ethics, and resilience.
