REMIXING & DEMYSTIFYING NUMEROLOGY
Talk
Presented by Analilia Morales, Kelly Kornet
Day01. Wednesday, July 07, 19:00-19:30 EDT
This talk explores how the Natural Foresight Framework might be remixed with concepts/patterns in numerology to imagine possible futures for individuals and communities. The framework represents complex adaptive cycles, and numerology breaks down the pattern of the universe into numbers, uncovering information about the world as a whole, and for individuals. By examining the intersection of these topics, it’s possible to take a more personalized approach to making meaning of past, present, and future interpretations.
The COVID-19 pandemic shed light on the fragility and complexity of our current systems. With no visibility of what’s coming next, the universe is asking us to rethink and re-evaluate the way we interact with people, things, and events. How could we have been more prepared? How might we move forward? Now What? These questions have led us to recognize the opportunity for the Design and Futures community to provide resources for individuals to make meaning of complex and challenging times.BACKGROUNDAcross cultures and ways of knowing, recurring patterns in human behavior and events have long been observed and acknowledged. Through our submission to Primer 2021, we’d like to explore and embrace ways that the Natural Foresight framework might be remixed with concepts and patterns found in numerology to imagine possible futures for individuals and their communities.APPROACHNumerology is the universal language of numbers. By breaking down the patterns of the universe into numbers, we are able to uncover information about the world as a whole, as well as every individual. One of the concepts in Numerology is the nine-year cycle. Within the nine-year cycle, each year is designated with a number from 1 through 9, and they follow in sequence. Each year brings a different lesson in life and understanding numbers can help us maximize their purpose. Numerology won’t predict your future but it will help you understand where you are in the cycles and periods of your life. The Natural Foresight model represents complex adaptive cycles in a continual figure-eight shape broken into four phases. Phase 1: Collapse, is marked by disruption and uncertainty, followed by Phase 2: Renewal, driven by transformation. Phase 3: Growth is characterized by diversity, taking advantage of opportunities, and accumulating resources before closing on Phase 4: Conservation, representing stability and maintenance. All systems experience different phases, each requiring a different response. Looking at the intersection of numerology and Natural Foresight we seek to take a personalized approach to make meaning of our own interpretations of the past, present, and future. While both numerology and Natural Foresight acknowledge common seasons in living systems, we seek to explore the nuance for where these models might converge and diverge. Our analysis considers past and possible future events for numerology years 4 and 5 (mapping to calendar years 2020 and 2021) and identifies major events that shaped/are shaping the external environment. The presentation will be bilingual (Spanish / English) by design, weaving between languages throughout.
ANALILIA MORALES
LEAD DESIGNER AT KALYPSO
Analilia is an enthusiastic art director & visual communicator based in Austin, Texas. As a young child, she discovered that creativity was her most natural form of expression. Analilia went to school for Industrial Design (product design and manufacturing) where she developed a passion for understanding people's needs and emotions. She also learned about functionally vs. aesthetics: good design is simple, memorable, usable - not just pretty.
KELLY KORNET
DESIGN LEAD AT WATERSHED PARTNERS
As a participatory futurist and designer, Kelly finds meaning in creating the conditions for individuals to step out of their day-to-day and collaborate in transdisciplinary teams to perceive and affect change. Using the tools of collaborative design, systems thinking and strategic foresight, she helps organizations build the capacity to navigate and transform in uncertain times.
